Save his Life please

Hello friends,

I am writing this blog to draw your attention to the plight of my friend's condition who is undergoing a very crucial stage of his life fighting with a very rare disease called "Budd-Chiari syndrome". It is a very rare disease,in fact it occurs only in 1 out of 100,000 individuals.

My friend's family has been going around different parts of the country for the last 8 months, for the specialized treatment of this disease.

His problem started with complaints of pain in abdomen, vomiting and then difficulty in breathing and Chest pain.
In two different Hospitals he was diagnosed with liver abscess(pus-filled mass inside or attached to the liver )

He was also diagnosed with having Pleural effusion. Pleural effusion is excess fluid that accumulates in the pleural cavity, the fluid-filled space that surrounds the lungs. Excessive amounts of such fluid can impair breathing by limiting the expansion of the lungs during inhalation.
The excessive fluid created was then artificially drained out and a chest tube was placed inside the pleural space for further removal of the excess fluid formed(which is used to remove at least 250-800 ml of liquid daily)

CT of upper abdomen was suggestive of Hepatic vein thrombosis (Budd-Chiari syndrome)

Portal Venography showed abnormality in the IVC(inferior vena cava) and hence the patient was referred to the specialized centre- SGPGI,Lucknow.

There the disease was diagnosed as Acute Budd-Chiari syndrome (along with some more problems like pleural effusion).

The final conclusion of Doctors there noted following problems-

*Hepatic vein thrombosis with distended azygous and hemiazygous veins.

*Total occlusion of IVC with suprarenal segment.

*Grade 2 varices(now (as of 27-04-10), it has advanced to Grade 3), mild PHG(Portal hypertensive gastropathy).

Ultimately, at SGPI Lucknow, the patient was advised to go for Liver transplant at a centre of own choice.

The patient was then taken to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi.
But there the doctors ruled out the possibility of transplanting liver because the patient's IVC and iliac vein was completely occluded(see Dr's report).

And then the patient was moved to medanta medicity(Gurgaon) for that purpose. There a Radiology examination was done(see its copy)on March 6,2010.

On March 9,2010 the Hospital issued a note of information(or say certificate) saying that the patient was suffering from Budd-Chiari syndrome and he needed the placement of TIPPS(Trans Jugular Intra Hepatic Porta Systemic Shunt) along with IVC stenting. It also said that this intervention needs to be done urgently for his survival and stated the approximate cost of treatment as 6 lacs.

You can see all the relevent medical Certificates/records by clicking here

Now, the financial condition of the family is not good, his father is no more there and his mother is a Housewife, besides they have already spent lots of money in the patient's treatment in the last 8 months, going for different private Hospitals in the Country.
So they are unable to arrange such a large amount(about 6 lacs) in such a short time span(just 20 days).

So please donate whatever amount you can. Remember you are contributing towards saving someone's life.

Thank you so much...

P.S.-

*Now, We have with us, the required amount. So now we are stopping to receive any further contributions. Thank you so much for your support...

**Rahul's Surgery/Operation had been done successfully by Dr. S.S. Baijal and right now he is going Great in his life. He has been re-admitted in NIT Jamshedpur with the new batch and he is carrying on with his regular studies.
THANKS

  4. Hello Sir,
Thanks a lot for showing your concern.
I talked to an immediate family member(elder brother) of the patient.

He told me that when they approached Sir Ganga Ram Hospital for the Liver transplant, there the Dr. consulted for Liver transplant- Dr. Arun Gupta referred them exclusively to Dr. S.S. Baijal for IVC stenting as he is a renowned specialist in that area. He further told me that there are very few IVC stenting expert in India and so his family was keen on getting his service only as they learned at several places that Dr. S.S. Baijal is a very renowned Doctor in this field in India.

Then they went to SGPGI,Lucknow to meet Dr. S.S Baijal. There they were told that Dr. S.S Baijal had left for medanta medicity(Gurgaon)and there is no IVC stenting expert left there(at SGPGI,Lucknow).

So, ultimately they had to go to medanta medicity to get the treatment from Dr. S.S. Baijal.
Actually the family is keen on getting treatment from Dr. S.S. Baijal only(as they want maximum possibility of Success of the operations)

But still if you have knowledge of any other good IVC stenting expert((Please use your own Network to find out about it), then please do inform me. I will try to convince the family about it then.

That summarises the whole thing I hope Sir.

Thanks a lot for spending your valuable time reading the blog and giving us your valuable advice.

  8. Hello Niharika,

Thanks for the suggestion, but u are saying as if Rai Sir is God ....
and for ur information, till now we have met Rai Sir,Anupam Chauksey Sir...and both of them have assured full support
    (but no monetary support)
Apart from that we have met the CM of M.P.
and we believe, we have received a mail from precedent's office that we r right now in the process of verifying..

Then personally, I have got an encouraging reply from the gorgeous Diya Mirza. She praised my efforts to get help for my friend and said the she felt proud to know me...

But the thing is that none of the above has guaranteed any monetary help(which is most important).

But still, I am very hopeful that we will be able to achieve our target well within the time limit because we are getting positive results from everywhere..

Anyway, thanks for your contributions, please try to help us in any way u can....

  10. To me 6 lac for procedure like Tips and IVC stenting makes no sense. I would definately go to AIIMS and check with department of Cardiac Radiology as they do lots of cases of Budd Chiari Syndrome...hopefully they may give a better guidance..all the best.

  18. Hello Krishnendu Gupta Sir,

THANKS a lot for your concern, but the fact is that the Operation has already been performed with the blessed hands of Dr. S.S. Baijal.
The treatment was going on under his observation only.
Right now, the patient is very fine, he was discharged from the Hospital around 20th May and right now he is at his home.....

  19. I AM SAYING THIS JUST OUT OF SHEER EXPERIENCE, DR BAIJAL IS THE BEST, BUT THE SAME THING WOULD HAVE BEEN DONE SUCCESSFULLY AT AIIMS AND THAT TOO SOMETIMES IF THE PATIENT IS POOR, AT REALLY FULLY FREE OF COST WITH EXTREMELY GOOD RESULTS, AIIMS GASTROENTEROLOGY DOESN'T ADVERTISE ITSELF MUCH, THAT IS THE PROBLEM

  20. Hello Anonymous,
Thanks for the comment and your concern shown.
But the Operation has already been done successfully , so why discuss about it now, and with God's Grace, Rahul is fine these days, he has been re-admitted in NIT Jamshedpur with the new batch and he is going on Great in his life.

    Thanks
